OTA updates: what they are

Over-the-air (OTA) updates let manufacturers push software changes to your car wirelessly via your home Wi-Fi or cellular. They can modify performance parameters, add new features, fix bugs, adjust charging curves, and update the user interface — without a dealer visit.

What OTA updates can actually change

More than most owners expect. Tesla OTA updates have added: full self-driving beta, dog mode, sentry mode, streaming services, gaming, improved regen braking curves, increased charging speeds for certain battery configurations, and range improvements through thermal management optimization.

  • ·User interface and new feature additions
  • ·Charging curve optimization (improved speed)
  • ·Range improvements via energy management tuning
  • ·Safety system updates (AEB calibration, collision sensitivity)
  • ·Performance adjustments (sometimes temporary unlocks)

How to receive and install updates

Connect your car to your home Wi-Fi (or ensure cellular is active). Updates usually download in the background overnight. Installation takes 15–45 minutes and requires the car to be parked and not plugged in for charging (or complete after charging finishes). You receive an app notification when an update is ready.

OTA track records by brand

Tesla has the most aggressive and frequent OTA update cadence — major updates every 4–8 weeks. Rivian updates frequently with meaningful feature additions. Ford, Hyundai/Kia, and VW update quarterly with meaningful improvements. Legacy automakers like GM and BMW update less frequently, but this is improving.

  • ·Tesla: most frequent — weekly minor, monthly major updates
  • ·Rivian: strong OTA cadence, adds features regularly
  • ·Ford/Hyundai/Kia: quarterly updates, meaningful improvements
  • ·GM/BMW/Mercedes: improving but historically slower OTA cadence

Updates that fixed real issues

OTA fixes have resolved: charging slowdowns at cold temperatures, regen braking calibration issues, battery thermal management errors, and cabin heating efficiency problems. These would have required dealer visits for gas cars. For EV owners, the car often improves itself overnight.
